Flee Youthful Lusts: A Biblical Reminder for Young People
What’s the best advice you’d give to someone younger than you?
“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” — 2 Timothy 2:22
Being young is an exciting season filled with dreams, friendships, emotions, and new experiences. But it can also come with temptations that can influence our choices and future.
In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul gives Timothy a simple but powerful instruction: flee youthful lusts and pursue godly character.
To flee means to run away. Some temptations are not meant to be entertained or tested. When something can pull us away from God, sometimes the wisest choice is simply to walk away.
But Paul doesn’t only tell us what to avoid. He tells us what to pursue:
Righteousness — Choose what is right before God.
Faith — Trust God even when you don’t understand His timing.
Love — Treat others with purity, respect, and genuine care.
Peace — Avoid decisions driven by uncontrolled emotions and conflict.
Godly fellowship — Surround yourself with people who encourage you to follow Christ.
How Can Young People Apply This?
When temptation comes, don’t try to prove how strong you are. Recognize it, step away, pray, and choose something better.
This is especially important in relationships. Attraction and feelings are natural, but they should not control your decisions. Before entering a relationship, ask yourself: “Will this relationship help me grow closer to God?”
Your youth is not just a time to enjoy life—it is also a time to build your character, strengthen your faith, and prepare for your future.
Flee what can destroy you. Follow what can strengthen you. Walk with God and with people who sincerely seek Him.
Final Thought
You don’t have to follow every feeling, accept every temptation, or rush into a relationship. You can choose God’s way.
Run away from what pulls you away from God, and run toward the life He wants you to live.
